I've just finished watching Smile 2. As a lover of horror and after how good the first one was I was really looking forward to it. Instead of it being a horror film in its own right, they've cast some unknown Disney Channel singer in it and made it all about her being a pop star. (I thought it was Miley Cyrus, I don't think it is, some other Gen Zed singer cut from the same cloth).
One of the many things that really annoys me recently is casting pop singers (or worse, wannabe pop singers or tick tock 'stars') in leading roles in films just so the film will serve as nothing more than a vehicle for their career.
--They cast a Disney singer in Smile 2, made in to a musical and ruined it.
--They cast Lady Ga Ga in Joker 2, made it in to a musical and ruined it. (By all accounts, I can't bear to watch how badly they've destroyed what was a great first film).
--They cast a wannabe singer in M Night Shyamalan's Trap, turned it in to a musical and ruined what could have been a great psycho horror film.
--They cast an unknown singer in the Hunger Games prequel, turned it in to a musical and ruined what could have been a great backstory for Snow.
They keep doing it and it's really annoying me. I enjoy films, not music. I watch films for the story, not to see some singers.
I can't abide musicals! If something is a musical it should be advertised as such so I can avoid it like the plague.

It sounds like you have some strong feelings about the trend of casting pop singers in major film roles, especially in horror or dramatic narratives. It can be frustrating when a beloved franchise or genre shifts in a direction that doesn’t resonate with longtime fans.
The trend of merging music with film, especially in genres that traditionally focus on storytelling rather than song, can feel jarring. For many, the anticipation of a sequel or a new installment in a beloved franchise comes with expectations about tone and style. When those expectations are subverted—especially with the introduction of musical elements—it can lead to disappointment.
It's understandable to want a clear distinction in marketing; knowing in advance if a film is a musical can help you make informed choices about what to watch. Many viewers appreciate strong narratives and character development over musical interludes, especially in genres like horror or psychological thrillers.
Perhaps you could focus on seeking out films that align more closely with your preferences—there are still plenty of horror films and thrillers that maintain a traditional format without musical elements. And maybe sharing your thoughts on film forums or social media could connect you with others who feel similarly!
